Which Side to Butter?

There is a type of Swedish bread Mr. H and I often buy and we have been having a debate on which is the right side to butter. Well in my opinion it does not matter as it all tastes the same when it is in your mouth but I have found I do have a preference which is opposite to Mr. H. One part of our debate is wether his choice of side is the “right” way or his and his families choice.

So I decided to take it you readers and see what you think!

side one

or

side two

I am a fan of side one because I feel like side two is using the underside of the bread but according to Mr. H butter and other items stick better to side two since it is flatter.

So what do you think side one, side two, or Mr. H and I need to get lives!

  1. Haha this reminds me of that Dr. Seuss book. I can’t remember the title though. I would tend to butter the top just because its the top. I never thought of your husband’s argument though…

  2. Side two. You always put butter on the flattest side. I remember in kindergaten (dagis) when I buttered the wrong side of a piece of hard bread, the side with deeper holes, and basically got yelled at by a teacher for it, because it takes more butter on that side. The same thing here, although I do’t think anyone should be yelled at for buttering the other side… ;)

I also agree with Mr H here, it’s just feels more natural to put things on the flat side.

      • No, that was really an overreaction! I was like five! But I still remember what side I’m supposed to put the butter on… ;) And now that I can chose whatever side I like, I have no wish to eat large amounts of butter anyway, but I sure did when I was five..! :)

Don’t you as an american usually put two sandwiches together? Well, from a swedish point of wiev, I guess that wouldn’t be two sandwiches but one for an american then… :)

  3. DEFINITELY side 1. I wouldn’t dream about putting the butter at the side that is supposed to be downward, that is the side that was downward when it was baked that that will in my world always continue to be down. I don’t turn my shoes upsidedown either.
But then again this is probably the most common conflict in Sweden… So I guess you are now finally Swedish (all my foreign friends that I serve bread like this puts the butter on side one, the same as you use and the same as I use.
